Just a few days ago, Grinding Gear Games announced possibly the biggest QoL improvement they are planning to implement in the game – Path of Exile item filter scripts. As seen on Reddit and in forums, people have been asking for something like that quite a few times. GGG said, they were resistant to the requests as it would have been very hard to make a UI to successfully support them. That is why they decided to add Item filter scripts.
Writing a script might seem something complex for people but it is actually much simpler than you think. You can show or hide items based on conditions.
For example, if you wanted to show all items that have at least 4 linked sockets, the code for that would be:
If you wanted to hide all Portal scrolls that drop, the code for that would be:
BaseType “Portal Scroll”
If you wanted to show all the gems with quality that drop, the code for that would be:
Quality > 0
You are also able to customize background color, border color and text color for the items. Take look at this photo from Path of Exile forum to see how it actually looks.
One more fascinating thing you will be able to do with these scripts – add specific alert sound for any drop you want. You can pick from 9 alert sounds, write a script and it will be played whenever stuff that is associated with it drops. For example – when Mirror of Kalandra drops, play specific sound, code would look like this:
BaseType “Mirror of Kalandra”
If this all seems too complex for you, there are already a tool out there that makes the script writing process much easier. The developer mentioned, that tool is in early stages of its development, but you can check it out and follow the development here!
While we are waiting for the Act four, you can follow developments of this mysterious beast in the website.
Price check please – this is one of the most common phrases heard in Path of Exile chat. There is reason behind that. With its unique currency system, pricing items might be extremely confusing for new players who have little to no experience with Path of Exile trading. Here in this guide, I will try to explain the secrets behind pricing items in the game.
How do I know, whether item is good or not?
One of the most complicated parts is to remember and understand what is good on item. Oftentimes people throw absolutely useless items in chat asking whether they’re good or not without even thinking about it a little bit. It is not that easy, you have to look at the item closely to price it well. Also, to price items a little better, it is good idea to familiarize yourself with meta, what builds are currently the most popular, what items they use and so on. It helps to understand what kind of items and mod combinations on the items people are looking for the most.
Base item is important in item pricing – it can make or break item. Here is an example – at the moment, crit Tornado Shot builds are popular, and the most important item in the build is bow. People who play this build, look for highest crit chance possible on the bow and the vast majority choose Harbinger Bow base because of its implicit crit chance mod. If you have Harbinger bow and Thicket bow with same mods, Harbinger will sell for more currency because of builds popularity and different purpose of the base item. Harbinger bows have high crit, Thicket bows have high attack speed, therefore Thicket bow will have little use to physical damage crit build – high attack speed weapons are used for elemental damage builds to take advantage of flat elemental damage applied as quickly as possible.
Affix tiers and combinations on the items
These two, are the major factors that determine price of any rare item. As I have mentioned in my other posts, rare item can have six affixes – 3 prefixes and 3 suffixes. Affixes have tiers, for example, here is the list of increased physical damage tiers and their respective names:
These affixes can only appear on rare weapons (not counting unique items). As you can see, increased physical damage have 7 tiers. Tiers are abbreviated with capital T in the game – for example, cruel mod is tier 2 physical damage or T2, Tyrannical is tier 1 or T1. Right base item with single Tyrannical mod is worth 1-5 Exalted Orbs. Yes, you did read that right – blue item with only one mod. The Tyrannical affix is very rare and its spawn rate on item is only 0.084%, that is what makes items with it so expensive.
I hope you can see where I am going with this. To evaluate item, you just have to look at the tiers and combinations of the affixes. Tiers can ruin the item if the affixes are wrong ones. Item with 6T1 mods can be much worse that item with 4T1 mods an 2 open affixes if some of the mods are in bad combination.
Good combination of affixes
There are several popular combinations of affixes, that are always needed on items and I will tell you a little about them.
Armor based pieces Look for life, 2 or 3 resistances + % increased armor/flat armor. If the combination is like this, price depends on the tiers of affixes – if resistances and life and at least 1 armor mod is T1 or T2 you have extremely good item to sell.
Energy shield based pieces Look for % energy shield + flat energy shield and 2/3 resistances. Life is optional on the chests based purely on ES, as most of people use them for CI (Chaos Inoculation) builds that do not look for life on gear at all. If the Energy shield on the item is at least 400 – 500, you can already get some currency for it, and if in combination with T3-T1 resistances, item can be worth much more.
Evasion based pieces Look for same things that on armor based chest pieces only with evasion instead of armor.
Rings have many nice bases, which each serve its own purpose. I, however, consider few ring bases to be pretty bad. These include Moonstone rings, Iron rings, Paua Rings and Unset rings. Some may argue that they are useful, but this is my own opinion based on experience.
Rings with resistance (sapphire, topaz, ruby, all two stone rings and prismatic rings) will always sell for something if they have decent (60 and more) life and at least 100% total elemental resistance. If the resistances are T1 and there are open affixes, rings like that can go for quite a few exalted orbs.
You will be able to sell rings that do not have life affix but have energy shield affix instead. Those are used by certain builds that do not utilize HP.
Rings with high mana, at least 50% mana regeneration, energy shield + resist or two will sell good for Eldritch Battery builds that convert energy shield to mana and use Arctic Armor.
Attack speed is really good on rings, so if you manage to find ring with decent/high life, resistances and attack speed, you can be sure that it will sell for good amount of currency.
Talking about amulets, many people choose base for the attributes – strength, intelligence and dexterity. Where rings are widely used to cap out resists, amulets are often picked for damage.
Really good combination for casters is spell damage + fire/lightning/cold damage + increased cast speed. These amulets sell really well if spell/element damage mods are high tier. If life is in combination with these affixes, expect even more profit.
For crit builds, very good amulets are with global critical strike chance + global critical strike multiplier + added physical damage. Look for amulets that have at least 30% for both critical strike mods in order to sell them for decent amount of currency.
Also, amulets for Eldritch Battery builds can be sold quite nicely. The combination is same as for rings – high mana regeneration + maximum mana + life and resist or two.
Evaluating weapons are mostly easy – you can calculate dps yourself or take look at the mods and their tiers.
4 main damage mods for weapons (axes, maces, swords, bows) are – Increased physical damage, increased attack speed, added local physical damage, and hybrid mod increased physical damage + accuracy rating. If item has all 4 of these mods with T1, consider yourself rich, as most of the time you will not be so lucky. In the weapons, look for combination that involves at least 3 of aforementioned mods with as high rolls as possible.
Wands have several good combinations – people play spell damage based wands and physical damage wands. Physical damage wands should ideally have 3 of previously mentioned mods and increased critical chance. Good wand base for physical builds is Imbued Wand.
Spell damage based wands have spell damage mod and hybrid spell damage mod, same as physical damage based weapons but instead of accuracy, wands have additional mana. Absolute maximum spell damage on Imbued Wand base is 118%, the closer you are to that value, the more expensive your wand is. If high spell damage is in combination with increased cast speed, you can get yourself some great amount of currency.
Daggers for cast on crit builds. Builds that utilize cast on crit are still quite popular and they require specific gear – one of which is their weapon. People that play cast on crit look for combination of attack speed, increased critical chance and spell damage on their weapon – obviously, the higher, the better.
Very many people do not realize, that staffs can be very expensive with just 2 mods together that some might not even consider useful.
Staffs that have +1 to level of gems in this item in combination with +2 to fire gems in this item are super rare on their own, if coupled with increased casting speed, you can swim in exalted orbs.
When you are new to the game, evaluation of items might seem very hard and the enormous amounts of stuff dropping can be overwhelming. Most items will be useless for selling and I will explain, which ones you should pick up and keep for selling.
At first – It is a no-brainer, that all currency items should be picked up.
Skill gems in this game is something that will always have use, some more popular or rare than others. If you have extra stash tab, it is generally a good idea to collect gems. Oftentimes people in global or trade chat look for specific gems and are ready to overpay for getting them, that’s where you come in with your collection.
Here is the list of skill gems you should definitely keep:
Drop-only skill gems – Empower, Portal, Enlighten, Enhance. They cannot be obtained from quest rewards and will sell for quite good amount of currency.
Rare and not so rare support gems – There are few skill gems that are very widely used and obtained only from Fixture of Fate quest (excluding drops). These gems are – Cast when Damage Taken, Multistrike, Spell Echo, Greater Multiple Projectiles, Chain, Cast on Critical strike, Concentrated Effect. If you happen to find one of these, they are more than worth keeping. Generally speaking, you should also collect popular support gems that are also rewards from few quests, like Increased Area of Effect, Faster Attacks, Faster Casting, Melee Splash and others. There are only few support gems that would not sell good.
Vaal gems – Vaal gems can be obtained from corrupted map bosses and corrupted zones. Always pick them up, some of them are used by a lot of players, for example Vaal Haste. The reason to keep all the Vaal gems is to use them in Vaal Orb recipe. 7 Vaal gems + any Sacrifice fragment sold to vendor will give you 1 Vaal Orb. Read more about Vaal orb here.
Aura gems – Aura gems are used by almost every build and people will buy them often, especially at the beginning of new leagues. Hatred, Grace, Herald of Ash/Thunder/Ice and Purity auras are all good gems to collect and sell.
Skill gems with quality – Always pick up skill gems with quality, it does not matter, what kind of gem it is. If the quality if low, you can use it for Gemcutter’s Prism recipe, if the quality is higher or the base gem is popular, sell it to other players.
This one is self-explanatory. Unique items are the least common rarity for base items. Not all unique items are going to be selling material, those you can store and use for Orb of Chance recipe, also known as Straight Flush recipe. It works as follows – sell four same base items with different rarities – normal, magic, rare, unique to vendor. For example – Normal Jade amulet + Magic Jade amulet + Rare Jade amulet + Unique Jade amulet sold to vendor together will give you 5 Orbs of Chance.
Items for vendor recipes
There are few kinds of items you should always pick up.
Chromatic Orb recipe
Always pick up any item with 3 different color sockets linked together and sell it to vendor. This is the best and the only reliable way of obtaining Chromatic Orbs besides trading, because they do not drop as often as other low tier currency.
Jeweler’s Orb recipe
Always pick up 6-socketed items, you can exchange them for 7 Jeweler’s Orbs using vendors. Be wary of links, if the item is 5-Linked or 6-Linked, it is not worth to sell it to vendor. 5Linked items can be sold for several Chaos Orbs to another players and 6-Linked items usually go for one to few Exalted Orbs, depending on 6-Linked base item and itemLevel (Chest armors are usually worth more than weapons).
Rare items of itemLevel 60+/75+ for Chaos/Regal recipe
Rare items should always be picked up, regardless of level, but you should start stacking them up in your stash tabs if they have itemLevel 60 or greater. These items are great way to earn currency using Chaos recipe and that’s how a lot of people get their currency pool going. If itemLevel is equal or higher than 75, you can get Regal Orbs from same recipe. Read more about currency related recipes here.
Stone hammers/Rock Breakers/Gavels
These are 3 base items that are used in chisel recipe. You can convert them to chisels by yourself or sell to other people as is.
It is always a good idea to collect flasks. While you are in earlier levels, good idea is to collect Quicksilver flasks and flasks in general. If Quicksilver flask has desirable mods, for example – Surgeon’s prefix and of Adrenaline suffix, you can sell it for fair amount of currency – somewhere around 10 chaos orbs or more.
Good idea is to vendor flasks with quality for 40% quality recipe and look for desirable mods on other flasks after identifying them. Flasks with Surgeon’s prefix will give you Alchemy shards – 20 of them combines into an Orb of Alchemy, which is good currency to have with you.
When you are in the later stages in the game and hp/mana flasks with best bases drop, good idea is to use Orbs of Transmutation on white flasks. Orbs of Transmutation are very common currency and usually stack up while you play and transmuting high level flasks can give you potential to roll good flasks and make some more currency.

P.S. – if I missed some valuable stuff, let me know in the comments.
What would Path of Exile be without trading? It’s a thing I do almost every single day of playing the game. You acquire currency, get items needed for your build and sell stuff you do not use. However, in Path of Exile, there is no place to list your items in-game as, for example, in World of Warcraft. Place for listing items is Path of Exile forum. Going through the forum and searching for exact items you need can be really painful and time consuming, so there is this website which pulls data from the Path of Exile trade forum and helps you find what you need – Poe.trade
Poe.trade website itself is fairly easy to use, but it can take some time until you learn use it optimally. Few great things about the poe.trade website:
It is excellent tool for new players to look up prices of unique items and skill gems
There are really many options to choose from, you can tailor your search very precisely and find exact mods, rolls you want on items
You have an option to search for items only listed by players who are currently online in game
When searching for the item, process is usually straight-forward, if you are looking for an unique item, just type the name in the search bar. You also have an option to only search for items that have exact buyout set therefore eliminating the need for negotiations about the price.
When searching for the rare armor item or ring, first thing I do is choose type of the item. Sometimes I also set base item but that only applies when I have specific needs, for example, Diamond ring base item when in need of more critical chance. After that, I just choose the mods for my item. My usual search for fairly cheap armor/evasion/energy shield items is – at least 65 life, +80% total elemental resistance, 70% increased armor/evasion/energy shield. When searching for items with parameters like that, you can get fairly good life pool, cap your resists pretty easily (unless you are using a lot of unique items in your build) and also have good armor/evasion rating. If your resist are capped, you can look for higher armor/evasion roll on the items and at the same time lower the total resistance parameter. Adding +armor/evasion/energy shield mod in the search box is also pretty good option.
Evaluating items in Path of Exile using poe.trade
Poe.trade is also a great tool for evaluating your items by comparing them to existing items in the market and their prices.
Let’s say you find an item and have no idea, what is it worth. You can always ask another players to price check it for you, although people love to troll a lot when asked for price checks in game.
For example, you find Topaz ring with 63 life, 35 lightning resistance, 16 to all resistances and 33 to energy shield.
To evaluate item, I would search for following mods – minimum of 60 life, 108% to total elemental resistance and +32 to energy shield. Found items would let you evaluate the Topaz Ring you want to sell pretty precisely. Of course, there are few things to keep in mind – for example, if found items have other mods with low rolls on the item and your item has still open affixes, your item will definitely be worth more than other items with their affix slots wasted.
Listing your items in poe.trade
Poe.trade is great website used by many players, so if you list items in forum with poe.trade buyout tags added to them, it will greatly increase the chance of someone buying the items from you.
Listing items is very simple, you just pick whatever you want to sell, and just add buyout tags under the items to get it listed in poe.trade. Here is example, how does it look in the Path of Exile trade forum post:
Also, if you want to appear online in poe.trade when you are actually in the game, be sure to add IGN : yourIngameName to your shop thread in the forum.

Orbs of chance – relatively inexpensive piece of currency, can bring you great wealth if you are lucky enough. Let me remind you how these orbs work: they roll normal (white) item to any rarity, including unique. Most of unique items in path of exile are cheap and useful only for leveling, but there are some that are very expensive.
I have compiled a list of quite expensive unique items you can get if you know, which base items are worth chancing.
Some time has passed since I created this article and the prices have changed massively, so don’t take these prices as a base for selling or buying these unique items. Prices change all the time and the best thing to do if you want to deterimne the cost of unique item is searching for it in poe.trade and take a look at buyouts.
Let me note, that these are prices for Torment league, they will be quite different if you are playing in Standard/Hardcore/Bloodlines.
Base item to use Orb of chance on – Glorious plate. Kaom’s Heart is worth around 4-6 Exalted Orbs.
Base item to use Orb of chance on – Judgement Staff. Hegemony’s Era is worth around 8-10 Exalted Orbs. Judgement Staff has another unique version – Pledge of Hands, which can be sold for ~5 Exalted Orbs.
Base item to use Orb of chance on – Penetrating Arrow Quiver. Drillneck is worth around 4-7 Exalted Orbs.
Crown of Eyes
Base item to use Orb of chance on – Hubris Circlet. Crown of eyes is worth around 4-6 Exalted Orbs.
Base item to use Orb of chance on – Imperial Bow. Windripper is worth around 19-25 Exalted Orbs.
Base item to use Orb of chance on – Spine Bow. Voltaxic Rift is worth around 15-17 Exalted Orbs.
Base item to use Orb of chance on – Prophecy Wand. Void Battery is worth around 26-30 Exalted Orbs.
Base item to use Orb of chance on – Occultist’s Vestment. Shavronne’s Wrappings, one of the most sought after unique chests, is worth around 36-40 Exalted Orbs.
Base item to use Orb of chance on – Mind Cage. Scold’s Bridle is worth around 8-14 Exalted Orbs.
Base item to use Orb of chance on – Gavel. Mjölner is worth around 32-40 Exalted Orbs.

Everyone who is playing Path of Exile, has definitely seen corrupted zones. They have different tile sets and monsters inside them. Every corrupted are has mods on it, they apply to monsters inside the zone.
These corrupted areas are one of the limited ways to obtain Sacrifice Fragments – Sacrifice at Dawn, Sacrifice at Dusk, Sacrifice at Noon and Sacrifice at Midnight. There are also advanced Mortal Fragments in the game, that can only be obtained by killing Atziri or buying them from other players.
Drop rate for Sacrifice Fragments in corrupted area is – 20% for Sacrifice at Dusk, 15% for Sacrifice at Dawn, 10% for Sacrifice at Noon and 5% for Sacrifice at Midnight.
Uses for Fragments
The main purpose for the fragments is opening portal in map device to Apex of Sacrifice or Alluring Abyss where you can face Atziri/Uber Atziri and mini-bosses before her. This procedure requires all 4 Fragments placed into map device in right order. Opening portal, however isn’t the only use for the fragments.
One of the good uses for fragments is to boost increased item quantity in your maps. This method works as follows – put a map and Sacrifice/Mortal fragments in the map device together. One Sacrifice Fragment boosts item quantity in map by 5%, Mortal Fragment boosts it by 10%. You can put 3 fragments alongside the map and they all have to be different from each other, so by using Sacrifice Fragments, you can boost item quantity in map by maximum 15% and with Mortal Fragments – by 30%. Tip – do not use Sacrifice at Midnight/Mortal hope alongside the map as other fragments are much cheaper and you would be wasting currency that way.
Another use for Sacrifice Fragments is using them to open up portals to corrupted zones in your map device. It works really simple – just put one Sacrifice Fragment in map device and you will have portal to random corrupted zone. People were using this technique quite often to farm Sacrifice of Midnight Fragments.
Best way of farming Midnights
While playing the game, I saw a lot of people who did not know about this excellent Sacrifice Fragment farming technique. Not so far back, GGG introduced new way of obtaining Sacrifice Fragments. After that patch, corrupted map bosses has high chance of dropping Sacrifice Fragments or Vaal skill gems.
The best way of farming corrupted maps for me was Museum maps.
The strategy works like this – use Orbs of Alteration on Museum map until you get Double unique bosses mod on map, after that, use Vaal Orb to corrupt the map. Sometimes map can turn rare and mod can disappear, but if it does not, you will have map with 6 corrupted bosses and each of them has good chance of dropping Sacrifice Fragment.

While playing the game, I am often surprised how many people actually do not know some very useful recipes that would make their life inside the game so much easier. So I decided to compile a list of recipes that I often use and share them with you.
Buy Path of Exile currency, unique items and other things here.
Vaal Orb recipe
This is, in my opinion, one of the most important PoE vendor recipes, yet a lot of people haven’t even heard about it. The recipe lets you obtain Vaal orbs. The recipe works as follows – selling 7 Vaal Skill gems + 1 Sacrifice at Dawn/Dusk/Noon will give you 1 Vaal orb. Do not use Sacrifice of Midnight for this recipe, that would be terrible waste of currency. You can check out more about Vaal Orb here.
40% quality recipe
This is very useful recipe for getting quality enhancing currency – blacksmith’s whetstones, armorer’s scraps, cartographer’s chisels and gemcutter’s prisms. Selling armor will give you scraps, weapons will give you whetstones, maps will give you chisels and skill gems will give you gemcutter’s prisms.
It works as follows – you need armor, weapons, maps or flasks with total quality of 40% or more for this recipe to work. For example, if I want 1 armorer’s scrap, I will sell chest armor with 16% quality + boots with 15% quality + helm with 12% quality. The same applies for flasks, weapons, maps and skill gems. One tip – do not use gems with quality greater than 10% for this recipe, better sell them to other players for greater profit.
Here you can see this vendor recipe with 3 currency items at once.
Cartographer’s Chisel recipe.
This is vendor recipe involving Stone hammers, Rock Breakers and Gavels, otherwise not very often used items, except for unique version of Gavel – Mjolner.
Recipe works as follows – you have to sell 1 Stone hammer/Rock breaker/Gavel with 20% quality + any map (my suggestion is use 66lvl maps) to vendor and it will give you 1 chisel.
Map upgrade recipe
Very simple recipe, yet I have seen people mapping and being unaware about this recipe. It works as follows – 3 maps of same level will give you map one level higher. For example, selling 3 lvl 66 Grotto maps to vendor will give you 1 lvl 67 Mountain ledge map. For recipe to work, all the maps have to be the same.
Physical damage / Spell damage recipe
This is my favorite recipe to use while I am leveling new characters. It allows you to create quite powerful weapons for new characters with very little currency investment.
The recipe consists of 2 parts – one for increased physical damage, another for increased spell damage. It works as follows:
Physical damage – weapon + blacksmith’s whetstone + rustic sash. The increased physical damage value will depend on rarity of the rustic sash – normal sash will give you 20-49% physical damage, magic sash will give you 50-69% physical damage and rare sash will give you – 70-89% physical damage on your weapon.
Spell damage – dagger/sceptre/wand/staff + blacksmith’s whetstone + chain belt. The increased spell damage value will depend on rarity of chain belt – normal belt will give you 10-19% spell damage, blue belt will give you 20-29% spell damage and rare belt will give you 30-39% spell damage on your weapon.
+1 to level of gems recipe
This is very useful recipe to boost level of your skill gems while leveling. This recipe adds +1 to level of fire/lightning/cold gems mod to an item. It works as follows – Magic wand/sceptre + Ruby Ring(fire gems)/Topaz Ring(lightning gems)/Sapphire Ring(cold gems) + Orb of Alteration.
Block chance reduction gem recipe
If you like PvP, this PoE vendor recipe allows you to obtain Block chance reduction gem. All you have to do is sell 1 dexterity based shield with 20% quality + puncture gem to vendor and Block chance reduction gem will be yours.
Level 20 Skill gem recipe
This is good recipe to earn some spare currency while leveling. It works as follows – any level 20 skill gem + 1 gemcutter’s prism will give you the same skill gem, but level 1 and with 20% quality. Great way to earn some currency is buying some decently high level gems and leveling them by putting them in your swapped weapon sockets. When they are level 20, just use this recipe and you will be able to make some decent amount of currency by selling 20% quality gems to other players.
Skill gem level reduction
Sometimes you get into a situation when you level up your skill gem one level too high (good example would be gems in cast when damage taken setup). This vendor recipe allows you to downgrade Skill gem by one level and works as follows – 1 skill gem + 1 Orb of scouring – it will give you skill gem one level lower.
There are a lot of recipes in this game and I covered those I love to use often. If you want to see all of them, good idea would be to browse Path of Exile wiki page.

While wandering through Wraeclast, you have definitely seen different kinds of strongboxes. They had various rarites, types and some of them contained different stuff than others. What new players might now know, they have potential to yield great items if your approach is right. In this Strongbox guide, I will tell you, what kind of currency to use on every kind of strongbox, which mods to look for and when to use Vaal Orbs on strongboxes.
Treat strongboxes as items – you can use almost all currency on them except for some pieces, whetstones, chisels or scraps for example. If you are already in merciless difficulty, my advice would be – carry stack of Orbs of Alteration, Orbs of Transmutation, Orbs of Augmentation, Scrolls of Wisdom for strongboxes. I will go more in detail further in the guide. For more in-depth explanation about currency, check this guide.
There are currently 11 different types of strongboxes:
Arcanist’s Strongbox – contains only currency. You can find every kind of currency in these boxes, even the rarest pieces. These, in my opinion, are one of the best strongboxes to apply currency on. If they are normal rarity, I like to apply Orb of Alchemy. If the strongbox does not have at least 50% item quantity or contains 5 additional items mod after turning rare, I reroll it, depending how much currency I have. It is also not a bad idea to just roll it with Orbs of Alteration for additonal items mod.
Armorer’s Strongbox – contains armor items. This is the best strongbox to use Vaal Orb on (applying vaal orb to a strongbox corrupts all the items inside it). Before using Vaal Orb on this box, you should definitely have one of these mods on the strongbox: increased item quantity/contains additonal items/contains 3 additional rare items. Corrupted Armorer’s strongboxes are the easiest way to obtain a 6-linked item – sure, it will be corrupted, but you will be definitely able to sell it for some decent amount of currency.
Artisan’s Strongbox – contains quality increasing currency (Armorer’s scraps, Blacksmith’s whetstones, Cartographer’s chisels and Gemcutter’s Prisms). I myself mostly do not bother using currency on these boxes. If I find it normal quality, I throw one Orb of Transmutation on it and that’s it – not worth using Orbs of Alteration on Artisan’s box.
Blacksmith’s Strongbox – contains weapons. As for artisan’s strongbox, I personally do not ever use any currency other than Orb of Transmutation on it.
Cartographer’s Strongbox – contains maps. I really like finding this type of strongbox. It is pretty rare, so I choose what currency to apply on it depending on map level I am in. If cartographer’s strongbox is in area under level 72, I just use Vaal Orb on it corrupting all the maps inside it. Worth noting, that corrupted map bosses drop Sacrifice Fragments and Vaal Skill gems. In higher level maps, I try to roll cartographer’s boxes with orb of alchemy and after that with orbs of chaos until I get desired mods on it. Good mods to look for are – contains additional items, increased item quantity and contains mirrored items.
Chemist’s Strongbox – contains flasks. I do not ever use any currency on these boxes as you can get flasks very easy from just playing the game. Update: These have been removed in Awakening expansion
Gemcutter’s Strongbox – contains skill gems. These are quite good strongboxes to use currency on if you want a lottery – you can get very lucky and roll gems have increased quality mod, although it is really rare. I myself mostly do not use a lot of currency on these boxes, but if you got some, you can try.
Jeweler’s Strongbox – contains rings/belts/amulets. These are good boxes to use Vaal Orb on. Corrupted jewelry and belts inside the box has good chance to turn into rare item with 6 affixes, which could yield you some pretty nice loot. Good mods to look for on the box are – contains additional items, increased item quantity or contains additional rare items.
Large Strongbox – contains all kinds of items. Large strongboxes have more loot in them by default. I like to roll for increased quantity using Orbs of Alteration on these boxes.
Ornate Strongbox – contains all kinds of items. Ornate strongboxes have increased item rarity in them by default. Good mods to look for is increased item quantity, contains additional items.
Strongbox – contains all kinds of items. Strongboxes are one of the most common boxes in the game. Look for increased item quantity, contains additional items mods on these boxes..
Diviner’s Strongbox – contains divination cards. These are pretty rare, so far I have encountered only 1 of these – still got pretty good amount of divination cards (a bit more than 10). Mods you want on this strongbox is increased quantity or additional items. If the strongbox is in area where very rare divination cards drop such as The fiend (Corrupted headhunter) you might want to roll for “Contains additional divination cards from the current area” for chance to get something really good.
Worth noting, that some strongboxes have unique versions – there are currently three strongbox types you can encounter while playing.
